Hey everyone, DennisCW here! If you're like me and spend a lot of time outdoors in sunny spots like California, you know how brutal the sun can be—especially when you're hanging out near your vehicle with nowhere to hide. I've seen all sorts of tent setups for Cybertrucks, Model Ys, and other cars, but many require roof racks or complicated installations. I wanted something simpler, so I decided to experiment with a DIY solution using just two affordable Amazon finds: a flag pole holder and a compatible umbrella. In this post, I'll walk you through my setup process, the results, and whether it's worth trying yourself. Let's dive in!
I picked up these items because they're straightforward and don't need any major mods to your vehicle. Here's what I got:
I'll link both products in the description of my video if you want to grab them yourself. Total cost? Super budget-friendly compared to full tent systems.
Attaching the flag pole holder to the L-track was my first step. If you've ever installed accessories on a Cybertruck or similar vehicle, you know the drill—it's all about lining things up perfectly. I'm not the handiest guy, and I remember struggling with Molly racks on my old truck. This time, though?
Honestly, it went smoother than expected. In just a few minutes, it was mounted and ready.
Not every umbrella works here—the handles are often too big for the holder. I tried a flag pole-style one first, but it didn't fit. That's where the G4 umbrella shines; its extension pole slips right in.
I tested it in real conditions, and here's what happened:
Pros:
Cons:
Overall, this was a fun experiment, and I'm glad I tried it. It's not perfect, but for quick shade on the go, it's a solid hack. If you've got a Cybertruck or similar vehicle, give it a shot and let me know in the comments how it works for you. Have you tried any other shade solutions? Drop your tips below!
