Hey everyone, DennisCW here! Welcome back to another update packed with the latest news on Tesla, electric vehicles (EVs), and everything in between. In today’s post, we’re diving deep into a massive new bill making its way through Congress, which could significantly impact your next EV purchase, including the potential elimination of the $7,500 EV tax credit. Plus, we’ve got updates on Tesla’s inventory, RoboTaxi developments, and more. Let’s get into it!
A new legislative proposal, dubbed the "Big Beautiful Bill," has just passed the House committee and is on its way to a full House vote, followed by the Senate, and potentially a signing by President Trump. The timeline is ambitious, with goals to have significant progress by Memorial Day and a possible completion around July 4th. This document is massive, and while you can Google it for the full details, I’ve broken down the key points that will affect EV buyers and owners like you.
The most headline-grabbing change is the proposed elimination of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit, with a potential end date of December 31, 2025, if passed. This credit has been a major incentive for buyers of Tesla and other electric vehicles. Notably, some brands that haven’t yet sold 200,000 clean vehicles by the end of 2025 might still qualify for the credit in 2026, including Rivian, Lucid, Polestar, and others. Tesla, having long surpassed this threshold, would no longer be eligible. This could spike demand for Tesla vehicles in the short term as buyers rush to lock in the credit before it’s gone.
Another significant change is the introduction of a $250 annual federal fee for EV owners and a $100 fee for hybrid owners. The rationale is to replace gas taxes and fund road maintenance. While I get the logic, this fee—equivalent to about $20 a month—cuts into the fuel savings that make EVs so appealing.
There’s a new deduction for loan interest on vehicles made in the US, which sounds promising as a potential offset to the loss of the $7,500 credit. However, it’s not as beneficial as it seems. With low financing rates like 0% on the Model 3 and 1.99% on the Model Y, the interest savings won’t come close to $7,500 over a typical loan term. Plus, this deduction only helps those who itemize their taxes and falls within an income cap of $100,000 to $200,000. Honestly, I’m not sure who this is really for.
Currently, there’s a $1,000 tax credit for installing a Level 2 home charger. Unfortunately, this is also on the chopping block. While some state and local utilities (like in California) may offer similar incentives, losing the federal credit is a blow for those looking to set up home charging.
Many manufacturers, including Tesla, Rivian, and Lucid, have used a leasing loophole to pass on the $7,500 credit to customers, resulting in incredible deals like $210/month leases for a Model 3. If this bill passes, that loophole will be eliminated, and we can expect fewer of these jaw-dropping lease offers.
Perhaps one of the most overlooked aspects of this bill is the potential elimination of the 30% residential solar tax credit. This credit allows you to get 30% of your solar system cost back as a dollar-for-dollar tax credit, which can even carry over to future years if unused. As someone who installed solar last year, I can attest to how valuable this is, especially for offsetting EV charging costs. Losing this incentive would be a significant setback for renewable energy adoption.
What’s Next? These changes are not set in stone yet. The bill still needs to pass through the House, Senate, and be signed into law. There’s room for amendments, so stay tuned for updates. If you’re considering an EV purchase, the uncertainty might push you to act sooner rather than later to lock in current incentives. Let me know your thoughts on this in the comments below!
Shifting gears, let’s talk about Tesla’s current inventory and potential deals. There’s a noticeable uptick in Model Y and Model 3 inventory on Tesla’s website, which often signals upcoming discounts. I wouldn’t be surprised to see inventory discounts as early as this Thursday or by the end of June to close out the quarter. Could we see a Hail Mary like 0% financing on the Model Y? It’s possible, especially with 0% already available on the Model 3.
If you’re in the market, don’t forget to use a Tesla referral code (like mine in the description) to get three months of Full Self-Driving (FSD) added to your order. And for those who’ve already secured their $7,500 credit or snagged a great deal, congrats! If you’re on the fence, remember that waiting for a bigger discount might cost you time and current incentives.
Exciting news on the RoboTaxi front! Tesla is on track for a launch in June 2025, starting with testing in Austin, Texas. Elon Musk recently shared on CNBC that thousands of cars are already being tested 24/7, with some fully autonomous Model Ys spotted on Austin streets at night. The rollout will be deliberate—starting with 10 cars and scaling to 1,000 within months—before expanding to cities like San Francisco and LA. Elon predicts hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of autonomous Teslas on US roads by the end of 2026. This could be a game-changer, akin to an Uber or Airbnb model for autonomous transport. I’m eager to try one out myself—let me know if you’re as hyped as I am!
Before I wrap up, a quick word on data privacy, especially if you’re financing a Tesla. With recent data breaches like the one at Bank of America (where customers weren’t notified for a month), protecting your personal information is crucial. That’s why I use Aura, today’s sponsor. Aura scans the dark web for your data, reduces spam calls, removes your info from sketchy broker sites, and offers up to $5 million in identity theft insurance—all in one app. Try it free for 14 days at aura.com/denniscw (link in the description). Don’t wait until it’s too late—protect your credit before you apply for financing.
Lastly, if you’ve just bought a Tesla or are about to, remember that it comes with zero accessories. I’ve partnered with Joah to bring you some must-haves like phone mounts, center console organizers, and my new favorite—an under-screen storage mount for sunglasses. Use my promo code in the description to save money and get free shipping on orders over $120. They’ve also got cool extras like wireless game controllers and portable air compressors. Check them out!
There’s a lot happening in the EV world right now, from potential policy changes that could reshape the market to exciting innovations like Tesla’s RoboTaxi. If the Big Beautiful Bill passes as is, the landscape for EV and solar incentives could look very different by the end of 2025. Meanwhile, Tesla continues to push boundaries with inventory deals and autonomous tech. What do you think about these changes? Are you rushing to buy a Tesla before the $7,500 credit potentially disappears?
