Hey everyone, DennisCW here! If you're a Tesla enthusiast like me, you've probably heard the ongoing debate about Full Self-Driving (FSD) and how Tesla can get more people to actually use it. In my latest video, I dove into this topic based on some intriguing community discussions, and I wanted to break it down here in this blog post. Let's explore whether Tesla should offer FSD for free (at least temporarily), why awareness is a big issue, and some creative ideas to encourage adoption. Plus, I'll share some must-have Tesla accessories from our partners at Joah. Buckle up!
It seems like Tesla is facing a bit of an "awareness gap." A surprising number of Tesla owners aren't even aware of FSD or aren't using it. According to recent polls and discussions, a low percentage of drivers know about this game-changing feature or bother to engage it. So, the big question floating around the community is: Should Tesla offer Full Self-Driving for free? Maybe for a trial period like 6 months?
Tesla already provides 3-4 month trials in some cases, so bumping it to 6 months isn't a huge leap. But hey, who doesn't love free stuff? A recent poll showed an overwhelming 80% yes vote for a 6-month free trial. That said, I don't think the length of the trial is the real barrier—it's getting people to try it in the first place.
Many potential users are held back by fear and anxiety. Driving is already stressful, and handing over control to new technology? That's a big ask. Others balk at the cost—$8,000 outright or even $99/month can feel steep if you're not convinced of the value.
Tesla loves to tout the safety stats, and for good reason. FSD is reportedly 10x safer than the average U.S. driver. We've seen tons of data backing this up, but stats alone aren't enough to convert skeptics. What people really need is a low-risk way to experience it and see the benefits firsthand. That's where incentives come in.
One idea from the community: Make trying FSD non-voluntary but rewarding. For example, offer discounts on insurance or monthly payments if users engage FSD at least five times and watch some quick tutorials. It's all about answering, "What's in it for me?"
I really liked this suggestion from Dirty Tesla: Gamify the experience! Start with a free month of FSD, then reward usage with bonuses. Imagine:
This could make trying FSD fun and rewarding, turning hesitation into excitement. Of course, there might be legal hurdles around "forcing" usage, but it's a cool concept worth exploring.
