Hey everyone, DennisCW here! If you're a new Tesla owner or considering purchasing one, you might be wondering which home charger is the best fit for your needs. Tesla offers several options: the Mobile Connector, the Wall Connector, and the newer Universal Wall Connector. With different price points and features, choosing the right one can be a bit overwhelming. In this post, I’ll break down my experience with each and help you decide which offers the best value based on your situation. Let’s dive in!
Charging your Tesla at home is a game-changer for convenience, but not all chargers are created equal. The right charger ensures faster charging times, safety, and long-term reliability. Tesla’s options vary in terms of installation requirements, speed, and compatibility with future technologies like power sharing. Let’s explore each option to see which one suits you best.
At $300, the Tesla Mobile Connector might seem like a steal. It’s portable, making it a fantastic option for travel or short-term use. However, Tesla and many experts, including myself, strongly advise against using it as your primary daily charger. Why? If not installed correctly or if you use the wrong outlet, there’s a risk of overheating or even fire hazards. There are videos and reports out there showing what can go wrong with improper setups. So, while it’s a handy backup, it’s not the safest or most efficient choice for regular home charging.
Verdict: Skip this for daily use. Keep it as a travel companion if needed.
If you’re looking for a solid, budget-friendly option for daily charging, the Tesla Wall Connector is a great choice. It needs to be hardwired, which means a safer and more stable installation compared to the Mobile Connector. This also translates to faster charging speeds, ensuring your Tesla is ready to go when you are. Plus, if you go through a Tesla-authorized installer, you can often get a warranty of up to four years.
Pricing for the Wall Connector is reasonable, and I’ve even got a deal for you! If you’re looking to buy one, I can help you get it for around $380 shipped (plus tax), which is a bit better than the standard $420. Just send me a DM on Instagram, and I’ll hook you up.
Verdict: A fantastic option if you’re sticking to a budget but still want a reliable, hardwired charger.
The Universal Wall Connector is my top pick, especially if you want to future-proof your charging setup. With talks of power-sharing capabilities (like with the Cybertruck), this charger offers compatibility with potential upcoming Tesla features. While setting up power-sharing might require extra wiring and cost, it could be worth it down the line if Tesla rolls out this feature for other models.
Like the regular Wall Connector, it’s hardwired for safety and speed, and it also comes with warranty options through authorized installers. If you’re in the Southern California/LA area, I highly recommend reaching out to my friend Mario at Smart Plug EV. He’s a Tesla-authorized installer with chargers in stock and is ready to travel with his team. Mention the "Dennis Deal" when you contact him (details below), and he’ll take care of you!
Verdict: Go for this if you want the latest tech and are thinking about long-term compatibility.
On a side note, if you own a commercial property like an apartment complex or shopping center, did you know you might be able to get Level 2 chargers installed for free? I know a company that handles everything from permitting to installation at no cost to you. If you’re interested, send me a DM, and I’ll connect you with them. Tesla also recently launched a new Wall Connector for Businesses page to help commercial owners find installers—definitely worth checking out!
Both the Wall Connector and Universal Wall Connector require professional hardwired installation, which is a big plus. Hardwiring ensures a safer connection, faster charging (up to 50-100 amps depending on the model), and peace of mind. Compare this to the Mobile Connector, which relies on outlets that may not be up to spec for daily high-power use. Plus, older models like the Gen 2 Wall Connector could hit insane charging speeds (up to 100 amps), though they’re harder to find now.
If you’re buying a new Tesla, keep in mind that it doesn’t come with a charger included, so budgeting for one of these is essential.
While we’re on the topic of Tesla essentials, let me share my favorite accessory: all-weather floor mats by 3W Liners. I’ve tested tons of mats—3D Maxpider, Tesmanian, and random Amazon brands—and 3W Liners are hands-down the best. I’ve got them in my Model X, Model 3, Model Y, and even my Cybertruck. They’re durable, fit perfectly, and keep your interior looking pristine.
Good news! Using my promo code Dennis35, you can save 35% off your order, bringing a set under $100. Plus, you’ll be supporting the channel. They’ve also just released their Pro Version for the Model Y Juniper mats, so check them out via the link in my video description or socials.
No matter which you choose, I recommend working with a Tesla-authorized installer for safety and warranty benefits. If you’re in SoCal, hit up Mario at Smart Plug EV and ask for the Dennis Deal. For deals on chargers or connections to the commercial installation company, feel free to DM me on Instagram.
