Hey everyone, DennisCW here! If you've been following my channel, you know I'm all about Tesla life – from the latest models to tips on ownership. One topic that always sparks interest is insurance. It plays a huge role when buying a Tesla, and with so many companies out there, it can get overwhelming. In this post, based on my recent video, I'll break down my personal insurance rates with Costco Insurance and share why I recommend certain options. Plus, I'll invite you to chime in with your own experiences!
Tesla vehicles are premium rides, and insuring them isn't always straightforward. Factors like your location, driving history, age, and the model all influence your rates. If you've watched my videos, you know I mainly recommend two options:
In California (where I am), options are a bit limited – Wawanesa is another solid choice, but I stick with Costco for my fleet. We have a family policy covering multiple vehicles, and I wanted to pull back the curtain on what I actually pay. This could be a helpful benchmark for you if you're shopping around or just curious.
A quick note on my coverage: I go with 100/300/100 limits (that's $100,000 per person for bodily injury, $300,000 per accident, and $100,000 for property damage). It's solid for California, where expensive cars are everywhere. All policies have a $1,000 deductible – I've bumped it up from $500 over the years to keep premiums down.
Our fleet includes a 2022 Tesla Model X, a 2024 Tesla Model Y (Juniper Refresh, all-wheel drive), an older Model 3 (liability only), and the beastly Cybertruck. Let's dive into the rates, starting from the cheapest to the most expensive. These are for 6-month premiums.
This one's an older model, worth around $10,000, and it doesn't get driven much. I skipped full coverage because any accident would likely total it anyway. Super affordable!
This is my daily driver – the refreshed Juniper edition with all-wheel drive. At around $150–$250 a month for most Tesla owners, this feels about average. Keep in mind, I'm in my 30s and in California; younger drivers might pay more.
You'd think the Cybertruck would be the priciest to insure, right? Surprisingly, it's not! This rate seems on the lower end for Cybertrucks in California. It's a head-turner, but insurance-wise, it's manageable.
Oof – this one shocked me. It's the most expensive on the policy, even more than the Cybertruck! I used to pay around $180 a month for it solo, but stacking everything on one policy might be driving up the cost. Honestly, this has me thinking it's time to say goodbye to the Model X.
Adding it all up, insuring our Tesla fleet isn't cheap, but it's part of the ownership game. Rates can vary wildly based on your state, age, and driving record, so these are just my numbers for reference. If you're in California or elsewhere, Tesla Insurance might save you some cash compared to traditional providers.
Insurance is such a hot topic that I'm considering creating a community resource. What if we compiled everyone's rates? Drop a comment below with:
If there's enough interest, I could set up a form or even a dedicated video/post to track and share anonymized data. It'd be a game-changer for new Tesla owners!
