Hey everyone, it’s DennisCW here! Today, I want to dive into a question I get asked a lot: Should you buy the Tesla Model 3 or the Tesla Model Y? I’ve been looking at the pricing and features of both models almost every day, and I was honestly surprised by what I found. Spoiler alert: The Model Y might just be the better choice for most people, especially with current pricing and inventory availability. Let’s break it down and help you make an informed decision.
One of the biggest shocks for me was how close the pricing is between the Model 3 and Model Y. At first glance, the Model Y is just $2,000 more than the Model 3 for comparable trims. For example:
That’s only a $1,500 difference! When you factor in financing, the gap narrows even further. Let’s look at some real-world numbers (note: these are rough estimates and include California tax rates for illustration):
Model 3 Long Range AWD (0% financing, 60 months, no down payment):
Model Y Long Range AWD (1.99% financing, 60 months, no down payment):
The monthly payment difference is less than $100, and the total cost difference is around $2,000–$3,000 over the life of the loan. For that small premium, you’re getting a lot more with the Model Y, which I’ll get into next.
I recently had the chance to drive a Model 3 Performance for a few days (shoutout to Mark for letting me borrow it!), and I can confirm it’s an absolute blast. Here’s what stands out about the Model 3:
Pros:
Cons:
If you’re someone who craves speed, tight handling, and that sedan feel, the Model 3 is a fantastic choice. It’s a driver’s car through and through.
On the other hand, the Model Y offers a completely different vibe, and for most people, I think it’s the smarter pick. Here’s why:
Pros:
Cons:
If you prioritize comfort, space, and utility—whether for family, road trips, or just daily errands—the Model Y is hard to beat.
Both the Model 3 and Model Y come with Tesla’s cutting-edge tech, including Full Self-Driving capabilities and advanced camera systems. However, the Model Y often has a slight edge with the latest updates and features, especially in newer inventory units. If having the most up-to-date Tesla tech is important to you, the Model Y might be the safer bet.
If I had to choose between the two, I’d pick the Model Y 7 or 8 times out of 10. The added utility, comfort, and minimal price difference make it a no-brainer for most buyers. Having owned almost every Tesla model since 2019, I can confidently say the Model Y just makes the most sense for the majority of people—unless you’re absolutely in love with the sporty sedan feel of the Model 3 or hate the SUV look.
