Hey everyone, DennisCW here! Today, I want to dive into a question that many Tesla owners are asking: Is it worth upgrading from an older Model Y to a brand-new one? With shiny new models rolling out, enticing financing options like 1.99% on all-wheel drive, and even launch series editions, it’s tempting to make the switch. But what are you actually gaining with the upgrade? As someone who has owned a legacy Model Y Performance, I’m breaking down the differences, upgrades, and whether the jump is worth it for you. Let’s get into it!
At this point, Tesla upgrades feel a lot like iPhone updates. You’re not getting a complete overhaul, but rather a collection of small, incremental improvements that enhance the overall experience. Think better battery life, a nicer camera, and a bunch of “nice-to-haves” that, when combined, make for a noticeably better vehicle. So, let’s itemize the key differences between an older Model Y (say, a 2020 or 2022 model) and the latest 2026 version.
If you’re upgrading from a 2020 or even a 2022 Model Y to a 2026 model, that 3- to 4-year gap makes these differences very noticeable. The new Model Y genuinely feels like a different car.
I highly recommend taking a new Model Y for a spin to feel these upgrades firsthand. Better yet, Tesla stores are now allowing 1- to 2-day test drives where you can take the car home and live with it for a bit. This is the best way to compare it to your current Model Y, especially if you drive it daily. Trust me, once you experience the new one, you might find it hard to go back. Be warned, though—it could spark some serious upgrade fever!
As inventory continues to build up for these Model Ys, Tesla is more likely to let you take one home for a test drive, so don’t hesitate to ask. And if you’re ready to pull the trigger on a new Tesla, don’t forget to use a referral code (like the one I’ve linked in the description of my video) to get 3 months of Full Self-Driving added to your purchase. It’s a sweet bonus!
Speaking of Model Ys, I’ve been toying with the idea of switching up the look of mine. I currently have a red wrap, which I love, but I recently saw an army green satin wrap on a new Model Y that got me thinking. Should I change it up? I’ve always wanted a black Tesla and a green Tesla, so maybe green is the next move for me. I’m also kicking myself for not going with the Ultra Red color option when I had the chance. What do you think—should I stick with red or go for a bold new wrap? Drop your thoughts in the comments!
One thing to note: if you’re buying a new Tesla, it doesn’t come with all-weather floor mats. After trying out tons of options—3D Maxpider, Tesmanian, and various Amazon brands—my absolute favorite set is by 3W Liners. I’ve got them in my Model X, Model 3, Model Y, and even my Cybertruck. They’re durable, fit perfectly, and offer great protection. If you’re interested, use my promo code (linked in the video description) to save 25% and get a set for under $100. Plus, you’ll be supporting the channel, which I truly appreciate!
So, back to the big question—should you upgrade to a new Model Y? If you’re driving a 2020 or early 2022 model, the answer is likely yes, especially if you value the improved ride quality, quieter cabin, and advanced tech like Hardware 4 for FSD. These small upgrades do add up to a significantly better driving experience. However, if your current Model Y is relatively new (say, a 2023 model), the differences might not be as drastic, and you could hold off for a future refresh.
I’d love to hear from you! Are you considering upgrading to a new Model Y, or have you already made the switch? Share your experience in the comments below. And if you found this breakdown helpful, be sure to check out my video for more details and links to the referral code and 3W Liners discount.
Thanks for reading, and I’ll catch you in the next one!
