Hey everyone, DennisCW here! If you're a fan of my Tesla build series, you know I'm always pushing the boundaries with custom mods to make these EVs even more epic. In my latest video, I took my Tesla Model Y to Unplugged Performance—my go-to shop for all things Tesla—and we did something a bit unconventional. We're not just talking wheels and tires this time; we added a full 1-inch lift kit to give it that true SUV vibe. Stick around as I break down the process, the upgrades, and my honest driving impressions. Let's dive in!
I rolled up to Unplugged Performance with my Model Y in its current setup: 21-inch UPO5 wheels in titanium silver, paired with Yokohama tires. I've gotta say, these wheels have been my favorite so far—they look phenomenal with that satin titanium finish, especially against the car's lines. The black versions were solid, but these silver ones just pop.
But today wasn't about sticking with the status quo. I hinted in the video that we're going beyond wheels—think suspension tweaks for something truly unique. If you've followed my journey, you might remember my old Model 3 Performance (now with a family member). Well, this build had me reminiscing about that, but with a fresh twist for the Model Y. I left the car in the capable hands of the Unplugged team and promised to check back soon.
A couple of days later, I picked up the Model Y, and wow—what a transformation! The team installed a 1-inch lift kit, which instantly makes it feel more like a proper SUV. They swapped in 18-inch UPO5 wheels in satin black, fitted with some seriously beefy Yokohama tires. This setup not only boosts the ride height but also adds a rugged, capable look.
Why a lift kit on a Model Y? Tesla's crossovers like the Model Y and Model X sit a bit low compared to traditional SUVs (think pulling up next to a RAV4 and feeling dwarfed). That extra inch provides better ground clearance—about 1.3 inches total now—which means less stress over steep driveways, curbs, or even light off-roading. As someone who prioritizes comfort in daily driving, I was pumped to test this out.
Jumping into the lifted Model Y, the difference was immediate. It rides noticeably higher, giving it a more commanding SUV presence. Visibility is improved—you can see more of the road ahead, reducing those surprise bumps and making city driving less anxiety-inducing.
As I pulled out of Unplugged Performance, I hit a dip in the road, and it handled it like a champ. No scraping, no worries—just smooth sailing. On the highway and around town:
Overall, it drives over everything with ease, making the Model Y feel more versatile and enjoyable for everyday use.
This 1-inch lift kit from Unplugged Performance is a game-changer for anyone who wants their Model Y to feel like a "real" SUV without losing that Tesla magic. It's perfect for urban explorers who value comfort, visibility, and a bit of rugged style. Huge thanks to the team at Unplugged for the killer work—they're always innovating and making these builds a blast.
