Financing rates for a new Model Y have climbed from 0% to 2.49% in just a few months, turning what used to be a strong deal into a noticeably more expensive proposition.
Rising Tesla Model Y Financing Rates Signal Trouble
I tracked the changes myself. On July 31 we still had 0% APR on the base Model Y. August 1 it moved to 0.99%. By September 3 it was 1.49%, then 1.99% on September 28, and now 2.49% as of October 22. That jump adds roughly $2,000–$3,000 in interest over a 72-month term compared with the old 0% offer. The same upward pressure hit some Model 3 financing as well.
This is the core of the problem buying new tesla right now. Tesla model y financing rates keep climbing while demand stays strong.
Model Y Inventory Shortage Fuels Worse Deals
Inventory has been wiped out for more than three weeks this quarter. Production is ramping, yet buyers are snapping up cars faster than Tesla can build them. The result is zero incentive for Tesla to sweeten offers. Instead we see tesla deals getting worse month after month.
Counterarguments and Why They Fall Short
Some point to upcoming unsupervised FSD as a reason to wait. Others note that 2.49% is still better than most bank loans. Both points have merit, yet neither changes the math on the current financing climb or the empty lots. Hardware 4 cars are already excellent for daily driving, so the upgrade risk to Hardware 5 feels overstated for most buyers.
My Take: Act Now or Accept the Trend
Demand is only going higher once unsupervised FSD rolls out more widely. That means production pressure and higher rates are likely to stick through the rest of this year and into next. If you are ready to buy, use the Tesla referral — 3 months free FSD + low APR financing to lock in three months of FSD at no extra cost. The referral still works even if you already placed an order, as long as you add it before delivery.
Waiting for better terms feels logical, but the trajectory points to tighter inventory and continued rate pressure. The window for today’s 2.49% financing may close faster than most expect.
