Full Self-Driving is dead, and Rivian just delivered the final blow on multiple levels. A bold statement? Absolutely. But after Rivian's explosive AI Autonomy Day announcement, it's hard to argue otherwise.
Rivian isn't messing around. They're rolling out Autonomy Plus for just $2,500 upfront or $50/month. Compare that to Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD):
| Feature | Rivian Autonomy Plus | Tesla FSD | |--------------------------|----------------------|--------------------| | Upfront Price | $2,500 | $8,000+ | | Monthly Subscription | $50 | $99-$199 |
That's a massive price slash. Sure, we haven't seen widespread real-world tests yet (though big YouTube channels and even Rivian testers have shared some promising clips). But at this price point, Rivian is gunning straight for the mass market. Rollout is slated for 2026 or early 2026 – not tomorrow, but soon enough to shake things up.
Rivian's approach is smart: a combo of LiDAR (LIDAR for R2, optional vibes for R1) and cameras. LiDAR can be deactivated if needed, making them flexible.
As Kilowatts nailed it: "Leaving Rivian's AI Day, I can't help but think they are positioning themselves perfectly. If vision-only wins like Tesla's doing right now, they're ready. If it turns out you need additional sensors for riderless self-driving at scale, Rivian wins."
Tesla's vision-only purists might scoff, but Rivian's hedging their bets. I can't wait to test it head-to-head.
This isn't just about price – it's a signal. Autonomy is going mainstream, with multiple players offering comfortable, capable systems. Tesla's lead? It's getting crowded. Rivian's move could force price drops across the board and accelerate innovation.
