Saying Goodbye to Our Tesla Cybertruck: A Year of Adventures and Lessons

This beast of a vehicle, which we picked up for $100,000 (plus taxes and fees) back in December 2023, has been through a lot with us. From epic road trips to wild modifications and even a few hiccups along the way, it’s been a ride to remember. A Brief History of Our Cybertruck Journey
We’ve had this Cybertruck for about 16-17 months now, racking up over 17,000 miles on the odometer. It all started with a crazy road trip from Austin, Texas, back when autopilot wasn’t even a thing on this model. We made countless supercharging stops (way too many, if I’m honest) and eventually saw the addition of Full Self-Driving capability, which was a game-changer.
This truck wasn’t just a daily driver—it was a canvas for creativity and adventure. We took it off-roading multiple times, showcasing its rugged capabilities on the channel. We also experimented with a ton of modifications, turning heads wherever we went. However, now it’s back to completely stock form as we prepare to say goodbye.
Modifications and Customizations Galore
One of the most exciting parts of owning this Cybertruck was the ability to customize it to our heart’s content. Here’s a rundown of some of the standout mods we did over the past year:
- Rims and Wrap by Unplugged Performance: We upgraded the rims and added a stunning Flexi Shield Lapis Lazuli paint protection film in a phenomenal blue color. It gave the truck a unique, eye-catching look.
- Lowering the Truck: We tried lowering it at one point, but let’s just say it wasn’t the best experience. If you’re curious, maybe skip that video on the channel—it’s not our proudest moment!
- Light Bar and RGB Headlight Mods by S SW Lights: These mods added some serious flair, especially at night.
- Tinting by OC Tint Solutions: We tinted the front windshield and side windows for a sleeker look and added privacy.
Each modification was a learning experience, and while not everything worked out perfectly, they made this Cybertruck truly ours.
The Challenges: Issues We Faced
As much as we loved this Cybertruck, it wasn’t without its fair share of problems. Being one of the early models with a super low VIN, we expected some teething issues, and boy, did we get them. Here are the major challenges we encountered:
- Motor and Inverter Issues: Both motors were replaced, along with the inverters and a super manifold. Tesla service took about 7 days to get it sorted, which was a pretty quick turnaround, all things considered.
- Random Creaking: There were some annoying creaks and noises that popped up over time, which seems to be a common complaint among early Cybertruck owners.
- Ongoing Issues in Later VINs: Even with VINs in the 30,000 range, I’m hearing reports of similar motor issues, so it’s not just the early units.
Despite these setbacks, Tesla’s service team was responsive, and we managed to keep the truck on the road for most of our ownership.
Why We’re Saying Goodbye
So, why are we parting ways with this Cybertruck after all the memories and miles? Tesla offered us a buyback through an interesting program they’re running. While we didn’t get all our money back, we did recover a significant portion of what we paid. From what I understand, this program might be an option for other Cybertruck owners looking to move on, especially if their vehicle has had recurring issues. If your truck has been trouble-free, though, it’s unlikely Tesla would approve a buyback.
