Tesla's Quiet 0% Financing Update: Minimum Down Payment Required – What You Need to Know
Hey everyone, DennisCW here! If you're eyeing a Tesla Model Y or Model 3, you need to pay attention to this sneaky change in their promotional financing offers. Tesla has quietly added a minimum down payment requirement to snag those ultra-low 0% or 0.99% rates. Don't worry – it's not as bad as it sounds, but it could impact your buying decision. Let's break it down step by step.
The Change: No More Zero Down for Promo Rates
Tesla used to let you finance with little to no money down at 0% or 0.99%. Now, they've updated the terms:
- Minimum down payment: ~5-10% of MSRP (closer to 10% including taxes and fees, depending on your state).
- For a base Model 3 (around $40k MSRP), that's about $4,000-$5,000 down.
- For a Model Y, expect $5,000-$6,000 down.
Real Example from Tesla's Site
I jumped on Tesla's configurator to test this:
- Model 3: $3,250 down → Rate jumps to 2.99%.
- Model Y: Same story – 0.99% becomes 2.99% unless you hit the minimum.
Click the "updated terms" link, and it'll show exactly how much you need. The down payment essentially doubles to hit that promo threshold.

Is This a Deal-Breaker?
Pros of the change:
- 10-20% down is smart anyway – lowers your monthly payments and builds equity faster.
Cons:
- At 0% or 0.99%, it's like free money. Why tie up cash when you could invest elsewhere (stock market's wild right now!)? Not financial advice, folks.
Bottom line: If you're buying soon, calculate your totals. Tools like Tesla's calculator make it easy.
Pro Tip: Use a Referral Code!
Don't miss out – grab a Tesla referral code (link in my video description) for:
- Access to those 0-0.99% rates (if you meet the down payment).
- 3 months of Full Self-Driving (FSD) free!
Inventory Update & What's Next
Tesla inventory for Model 3 (pink line) and Model Y (mustard line) is stagnant. Model 3 still leads in stock.
- Model 3: Free supercharging promo.
- Model Y: Due for love soon – especially with the new Frost Blue unveil.
End of Q2 (June) is coming. Expect bigger promos like lower rates or incentives to clear lots.
