Hey everyone, DennisCW here! If you're as obsessed with Tesla as I am, you’ve probably been wondering why the Model 3 still lacks a front bumper camera, especially when it’s a standard feature on other Tesla models like the Cybertruck, Model Y, and even the refreshed Model S and X (though those haven’t been delivered yet). Today, I’ve got some exciting insights to share about the potential for a Model 3 camera refresh, thanks to our favorite Tesla hacker, Green. Let’s dive in!
For a while now, Tesla fans have been scratching their heads over the absence of a front bumper camera on the Model 3. After all, it’s a key component for enhanced Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) capabilities, and it’s already present in other Tesla vehicles. So, what’s the deal?
According to Green, a well-known Tesla hacker who’s been featured on this channel multiple times, the issue might be tied to hardware limitations. Specifically, Green pointed out that in all observed Model 3 units so far, there’s no port on the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) for a front bumper camera. That’s a pretty significant roadblock.
However, there’s hope on the horizon. Green did some digging and discovered something intriguing: much like what happened with the Model Y, Tesla has rolled out a new computer with a different part number that includes a port for the camera. This suggests that a hardware update could be in the works for the Model 3.
While it’s not entirely clear when this new computer will make its way into production vehicles, Green speculates that we might see the front camera integrated into the Model 3 as early as the end of 2024—at least in some factories. Given that the refreshed Model Y already rolled out this year with updated hardware, it’s not a far-fetched idea to think the Model 3 could follow suit.
Another interesting tidbit from Green’s findings is that the new car computer is marked as "2 SoC" (System on Chip), and there’s even firmware evidence of a "3 SoC" version. What could that be for? It’s anyone’s guess, but it’s exciting to think about the possibilities—perhaps an even more powerful system for advanced autonomy features like Robotaxi?
With Robotaxi now unveiled and Tesla pushing hard on autonomous driving tech, adding a front bumper camera to the Model 3 seems like a logical next step. Fingers crossed we’ll see this update by the end of the year. It would be a game-changer for Model 3 owners and prospective buyers alike.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Are you holding off on buying a Model 3 until the front camera is added? Or do you already own one and hope for a retrofit option? Drop your comments below—I’m curious to know what’s on your mind!
