Tesla just rolled out the Tesla Model 3 V2L feature for 2027 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in three markets only: China, Australia, and New Zealand. This means owners can finally power tools, heaters, and microwaves using the Tesla V2L adapter 2027, but only after the new year and only if you buy the official adapter.
The announcement adds the Tesla Vehicle to Load Model Y capability that some Performance and Long Range variants already carry in those regions. Tesla Model Y power outlet access works through the dedicated adapter rather than a built-in 110-volt socket like Rivian or Cybertruck models provide. Current cars cannot be upgraded, so 2026 and earlier owners are left waiting.
What the rollout actually delivers
Right now the system supports portable loads only. Full home backup would require future software and a Powerwall sync, something Tesla has not confirmed. The limitation keeps this release simpler than true vehicle-to-home setups but still useful for camping, job sites, or emergency power.
Why the adapter approach feels outdated
Instead of integrating a Tesla Model Y power outlet directly into the vehicle, Tesla forces owners to carry an extra piece of hardware. That extra step reduces convenience compared with competitors that bake the outlet into the frunk or rear cargo area. It also adds cost and another item that can get lost.
Bottom line for Tesla owners
If you live in one of the three supported markets and plan to buy a 2027 Model 3 or Model Y, the Tesla Model 3 V2L feature is a nice addition. Everyone else will keep watching for wider Tesla V2L China Australia expansion and a possible built-in solution. Watch the full breakdown here: https://youtube.com/watch?v=QChGPEg1zPc.
