Hey everyone, DennisCW here! If you've been following my YouTube channel, you know I'm all about exploring the real-world performance of Tesla vehicles. Recently, I took a road trip from Los Angeles to Las Vegas for SEMA, and I decided to vlog the journey in my red Tesla Model Y (with the Cybertruck tagging along for comparison). This post breaks down the experience, focusing on battery life, charging stops, and tips for making the drive smooth. Whether you're planning your own EV adventure or just curious about Tesla's long-distance capabilities, let's dive in!
We kicked off the trip from Los Angeles with the Model Y charged to about 95%. The goal was simple: document the battery state of charge (SoC), charging needs, and overall efficiency on the way to Vegas. For context, we're comparing this to the Cybertruck, which has a bigger battery but different energy demands.
The drive to our first stop in Baker took about an hour and a half. By the time we arrived:
This highlights how the Model Y is more efficient for highway driving compared to the bulkier Cybertruck.
At the Baker Supercharger, we plugged in and noticed the charge rate was capped at 82 kW. A quick check in the app revealed the message: "Charge rate is limited by the charging station." This is a common issue when stalls are congested—it's like bandwidth sharing among chargers.
Pro tip: If you see that notification, consider switching stalls. We did just that when another vehicle left, and boom—our charge rate jumped higher! It's all about finding a less busy spot to maximize speed.
Next up, we headed to Barstow for a break. Why Barstow? Well, partly for the unique Del Taco experience. Fun fact: The owner kept some locations here before selling the chain, so they supposedly use different ingredients and offer better service. We grabbed some tacos, hit the outlet mall, and used the bathroom—turning a charging stop into a mini adventure.
We charged the Model Y up to 100% in about 30 minutes, even though we unplugged early to explore. From there, the navigation showed we could reach Vegas in 2 hours and 19 minutes with an estimated 25% SoC remaining. That's impressive—one full charge might get you there with just a single stop!
Our last charging pit stop was at Prim, where we arrived with the Model Y at about 26% SoC after leaving Barstow at 100%. This Supercharger is rated at 325 kW, but oddly, it lacked the usual status screen—still, it charged quickly.
The Model Y's smaller battery allowed for faster top-ups compared to the Cybertruck. We charged for around 20 minutes, which was plenty to finish the trip comfortably.
The entire journey took about 5 hours, though we could have shaved it down to 4 hours and 20 minutes with quicker stops or a higher starting charge. Speeding through charges is an option if you're in a rush, but we enjoyed the breaks.
