Hey everyone, DennisCW here! Welcome back to another update on all things Tesla. Today, I’m diving into a topic that I know many of you have been buzzing about in the comments: the upcoming Tesla Model Y trims. From the long-range rear-wheel drive to the performance model, and even the elusive cheaper Model Y, there’s a lot to unpack. I’ll share my thoughts on when these trims might hit the market, what others are saying, and I’d love to hear your predictions too! Let’s get started.
As of now, there’s really only one Model Y variant available in the US: the Long Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD) with the Juniper Launch Series package. This version comes with perks like Full Self-Driving (FSD) and an acceleration boost, which might make it appealing depending on your build and needs. However, it’s clear from your feedback that many of you are holding off on a purchase, waiting for other trims to drop. Whether it’s a more affordable option, a performance beast, or a 7-seater for the family, Tesla’s current offering isn’t quite hitting the mark for everyone.
Based on comments, community discussions, and insights from sources like Lars and Engineering for Tesla, here’s a breakdown of the anticipated Model Y trims and my thoughts on each:
After the popularity of the Model 3 Long Range RWD—known for being the cheapest build with an incredible $349/month payment—I can see why so many of you are eager for a similar Model Y variant. This could be the low-cost option that pushes Tesla past the “no demand” slump for the Model Y. A more affordable price point with decent range would likely attract a ton of buyers who find the current AWD overkill.
For the speed enthusiasts out there, the Model Y Performance is the one to watch. I know you’re all about that acceleration and power! Interestingly, the Model 3 Performance dropped in April last year, so I’m twiddling my thumbs wondering why the Model Y Performance is taking so long. A source from Frunk to Trunk mentioned a Tesla employee hinting at a 6-month timeline, which could mean a Q4 release (think October or November). Are you willing to wait that long, or is the current AWD tempting enough?
The 7-seater Model Y is another hot topic, but I’ll be honest—I’m not sold on it. For families with two kids and a partner, I think a Model X makes way more sense due to the tighter space in a Model Y. If you’re planning road trips, the third row in a Model Y will feel cramped. That said, it could work as a secondary family vehicle for occasional use when relatives are in town. What’s your take—would you opt for this configuration?
Lastly, there’s talk of a more budget-friendly Model Y, possibly akin to the Mexico-built Model 3 with slightly lower build quality. This is a frequent request in my comment sections, and I get it—accessibility matters. Tesla could be holding off on this to maintain higher margins with the current Model Y lineup, but a cheaper variant could open the floodgates for new buyers.
I can’t help but feel Tesla is somewhat shooting themselves in the foot by delaying these releases. Many of you have shared that you’re postponing your purchase until the trim you want is available. It’s almost like a reverse Osborne effect—people are waiting for the new models and skipping the current Long Range AWD. Tesla might be prioritizing higher margins with the existing inventory, but as stock levels rise, I believe they’ll pivot to releasing trims like the RWD or Performance to boost demand.
Here’s my best guess on when we might see these trims roll out:
Of course, these are just educated guesses. Tesla’s plans can shift based on a variety of factors, from production capacity to global demand trends.
I’m curious to hear from you! Which Model Y trim are you most excited about, and when do you think it’ll launch? Are you holding off on buying until the Performance or a cheaper variant drops, or are you tempted by the current Long Range AWD? Drop your thoughts in the comments below—I read every single one!
