Hey everyone, DennisCW here with a critical update for anyone considering a Tesla purchase. If you’ve been on the fence about buying a Tesla, now might be the time to act. There’s a major development regarding the $7,500 federal EV tax credit that could impact your decision—and your wallet. Let’s dive into the details and why you might want to bump up your purchase plans ASAP.
In a recent revision to Trump’s tax credit and spending bill, US Senate Republicans have proposed moving up the end date for the $7,500 federal EV tax credit to September 30th, 2025. This is a full 90 days earlier than the original date of December 31st, 2025. That’s right—potentially just 105 days from now, this significant incentive could disappear for new Tesla vehicle sales.
While the bill still needs to pass through the House, Senate, and be signed by Trump (with a target date around July 4th), this accelerated timeline is a wake-up call. If signed into law as is, the tax credit for new EVs could end by the close of next quarter. Additionally, the revised bill would also eliminate the $4,000 tax credit for used electric vehicles and immediately end credits for leased vehicles not assembled in North America.
Elon Musk didn’t hold back on this development, stating:
"The latest Senate draft bill will destroy millions of jobs in America and cause immense strategic harm to our country. Utterly insane and destructive. It gives handouts to industries of the past while severely damaging industries of the future."
Musk’s frustration is clear, as this move could hurt the growth of electric vehicles, solar, and clean energy—key industries driving innovation in America.
Adding to the urgency, many of Tesla’s current incentives are set to expire in just 2 days (end of the month). For instance:
While new incentives might roll out next quarter, there’s no guarantee they’ll be as attractive—especially if a surge in demand hits due to the looming tax credit deadline. If the $7,500 credit is set to end by September 30th, Tesla might not need to offer deeper discounts. They could maintain or even raise rates to something like 2.99%, banking on the rush of buyers trying to lock in the credit.
I’ve often advised waiting for the next quarter or better deals, but this update changes the game. With the potential end of the $7,500 tax credit just 90 days away, we could see a massive spike in demand for Tesla vehicles. If you’re risk-averse and want to secure the credit, now might be the time to act—especially with current incentives expiring in 2 days.
That said, buying in the final days of the month can be tricky. You’ll likely need good credit for instant approval or a solid down payment, as banks are often closed on weekends. If you’re ready, head to your local Tesla store to lock in a deal. One of our community members, Jeff, recently shared an incredible experience: he walked into a Tesla store to check out a Model Y and walked away with $10,000 in total incentives, including free color choice, a free tow hitch, an extra $500 off, and 1.99% financing. The catch? He had just 2 days to pick up the car to meet Tesla’s end-of-month delivery push. Stories like this show that Tesla is serious about moving inventory by the end of the quarter.
Speaking of deliveries, analysts are projecting Tesla to hit around 385,000 units this quarter. We’ll know the official numbers in about a week, so stay tuned for that update!
