Hey everyone, DennisCW here! If you're a Tesla enthusiast like me, you've probably been buzzing about the new affordable Model Y. In my latest video, I dove into some unexpected features that make this entry-level version stand out. Today, I'm breaking it down in this blog post to give you all the details. Let's jump right in and explore what's under the hood—literally and figuratively.
One of the first surprises is the glass roof on the standard Model Y. At first glance, it might look like it's covered up, but yes, there is a glass roof underneath that headliner. Tesla executive Lars Moravy explained that you could technically cut through the cover to expose it, but proceed with caution.
As Lars put it: "All glass is not equal." The premium Model Y versions come with laminated glass featuring silver IR reflective coatings that keep the cabin cool by rejecting solar heat. The standard version? Not so much. If you expose it, your car might turn into a sauna on sunny days. You could try tinting it or adding a reflective film, but honestly, it's probably best to leave it as is—especially since many owners requested a closed headliner for comfort.
This feature shows Tesla's commitment to listening to customer feedback while keeping costs down. It's a clever way to offer affordability without skimping on the basics.
Next up is something that caught my eye in a quick demo video: the frunk (that's front trunk for the uninitiated) on the standard Model Y has a soft-close mechanism. Unlike other Tesla models where you have to latch it and push down manually—risking fingerprints and smudges—this one closes smoothly on its own, just like a traditional trunk.
It's a small but awesome upgrade that makes daily use way more convenient. I've always preferred aftermarket auto-close solutions (shoutout to the Honos one—link in the description of my video), but seeing this built-in on the affordable Model Y is exciting. Fingers crossed Tesla rolls this out to more models soon!
While not as "surprising," it's worth noting that the standard Model Y comes equipped with 18-inch Hankook Tire Evo tires. These are the same ones you'll find on higher-end Model Y variants, and in my experience, they're fantastic—offering great performance and durability.
These details are popping up as the cars hit showrooms. I spotted one in Plano, Texas, and it's cool to see deliveries happening so quickly. No luck yet in Southern California (Los Angeles area folks, hit me up if you know of any—I'd love to check one out in person!). Plus, Tesla is testing the standard Model Y in Canada, hinting at broader market availability soon.
The affordable Model Y is shaping up to be a solid option for budget-conscious EV buyers, with these features adding real value. What do you think? Are you excited about the glass roof potential, the soft-close frunk, or something else? Drop your thoughts in the comments below—I'd love to hear from you!
One quick reminder: If you're picking up a new Tesla, it doesn't come with all-weather floor mats. My go-to recommendation is the 3W all-weather set—they fit perfectly, come with a lifetime warranty, and we've got them on all our Teslas. Use promo code Dennis35 for 35% off. It's an unbeatable deal! Links are in my video description, and using them supports the channel.
Thanks for reading, and stay tuned for more Tesla updates. Drive safe!
