Hey everyone, DennisCW here! If you just picked up your first Tesla, congrats! 🎉 But before you hit the road too hard, there are a few wheel and tire must-dos that most new owners overlook. These simple steps could save you from headaches, vibrations, and expensive repairs down the line. I've been through it all with my own Teslas, including a Model X and Model Y Performance, so let's dive into my top three tips.
Fresh out of the factory or showroom, your Tesla's alignment might not be perfect—especially after transport or if there's any minor shipping damage. An alignment ensures your wheels are perfectly dialed in, improving handling, tire wear, and safety.
Where to go?
Don't skip this—it's a small investment for long-term savings.
Road hazards like potholes, curbs, and debris are everywhere, especially in urban areas. Tesla's wheel and tire insurance exists, but it's pricey and restrictive. Instead, check out America's Tire (not sponsored, but I'd love to be—they're that good!).
For about $50 per tire, you get road hazard coverage. I've used mine 10 times on my previous Model X—same-day repairs or brand-new tires. Quick, easy, and worth every penny if you want to get back on the road fast.
Not all Teslas can rotate tires easily. Staggered setups (like on the Model Y Performance) have larger rear wheels, making rotations impossible without changes.
Solutions:
Bonus troubleshooting: Feeling vibrations or bouncing? It could be the sound-deadening foam inside the tire delaminating (the glue fails). Contact Tesla Service—they've replaced entire sets for some owners. They can remove the foam while ordering new tires too.
These tips are game-changers for new Tesla owners. Start with Tesla Service for any foam issues, and explore these options to keep your ride smooth and safe.
