Is Tesla's Windshield and Wheel & Tire Protection Worth It? My Honest Review
Hey everyone, DennisCW here! If you're a Tesla owner like me, you've probably been pitched on those optional protection plans for your windshield, wheels, and tires. In this post, I'm breaking down whether they're actually worth it based on my real-world experience. Spoiler: My quick answer is no to wheel and tire protection (Tesla's version, at least), and yes to windshield protection—but with some important caveats.
Windshield Protection: A Solid Yes (Mostly)
Tesla offers windshield protection for about $16 a month on my Model Y, and I signed up right away after the first three months free trial. Here's why:
- Convenience is king: You're already heading to Tesla for service. Why mess with third-party shops like Safelite, only to get sent back to Tesla for recalibration anyway? I've been through that hassle—it's a pain.
- Cost savings: Windshields run $1,800–$2,000 to replace. I run a $1,000 deductible on my insurance, so this plan bridges the gap nicely. We do a ton of road trips in California, where chips and cracks are inevitable.
Caveats:
- They denied it for my Cybertruck because of existing pits—lesson learned: get it early!
- Check your state: In places like Florida, you might have no-deductible windshield coverage through insurance, making Tesla's plan unnecessary.
Overall, at that price and with direct Tesla service, it's a no-brainer for me.
Wheel & Tire Protection: Skip Tesla's, Go Third-Party
Tesla's wheel and tire plan? Hard pass. It's restrictive, covers limited damage, and doesn't offer great value.
Instead, I swear by America's Tire (Discount Tire) road hazard protection—$50 per tire. I've had it on my previous Model X and other Teslas, and it's saved me at least 10 times:
- 6 full tire replacements
- Multiple plugs and repairs
They're everywhere in California (and nationwide), stock tons of Tesla tires, and I've gotten same-day service every time. No sponsorship here—just genuine recommendation from years of potholes and debris.
Final Thoughts
Windshield: Yes, for the convenience and cost. Wheels/tires: Tesla no, America's Tire yes.
