With the Rivian R2 set to launch any day now, the comparisons to the Tesla Model Y are already heating up. As someone who's deeply immersed in the EV world, I've seen the R2 up close at the LA Auto Show (though I couldn't hop inside). Today, I'm breaking down why these two vehicles are about to go head-to-head in the hotly contested $40,000–$60,000 SUV segment—and which one might suit your lifestyle better.
One of the first things that struck me about the R2 was its size. Side-by-side with the Model Y, it's surprisingly similar in dimensions, but Rivian's design magic makes it feel massive—like a mini version of their R1 lineup. It's an optical illusion that gives it a more rugged, substantial presence. If you're flashing these two next to each other, don't be fooled; the R2 punches above its weight visually.
Let's talk use cases:
Rivian R2: Built for the adventurers. Heading to Joshua Tree, national parks, or off-road trails? The R2's utility shines here. Rivian just demoed the rear window dropping completely down—perfect for tossing gear in the back without fuss. It's rugged, capable, and screams "get out there."
Tesla Model Y: The ultimate city slicker and highway hauler. With Full Self-Driving (FSD) capabilities, it's dialed in for commuting, errands, and long hauls. Great all around, but not your off-road beast.
Don't get me wrong—the Model Y is excellent—but the R2 edges it out for those weekend warriors.
I've driven the Rivian R1 SUVs and trucks, and honestly, the suspension wasn't my favorite—it felt a bit too firm. But the R2? It sits higher than the Model Y, which could translate to a more comfortable ride over bumps and uneven terrain. Tesla has the Model Y's suspension perfectly tuned for everyday driving, though. I'm curious if Rivian nailed it this time.
The real excitement ramps up when prices drop. Both target that sweet $40k–$60k range where most buyers live. We desperately need more competition here to push innovation and value.
Full disclosure: I've got a deposit down on an R2. Can't wait to see if it lives up to the hype.
