Hey everyone, DennisCW here! Tesla just dropped some updated battery recommendations in their app, and I dove deep into them in my latest video. If you're a Tesla owner, these tips could help maximize your battery's lifespan. Let's break them down one by one, with my honest feedback on how they apply in real life.
First off, Tesla is advising don't supercharge regularly. It's not that you can't use Superchargers at all, but making it a habit isn't ideal for long-term battery health. This makes sense if you're optimizing for 10+ years of ownership, but if you're leasing or flipping the car sooner, it might not be a deal-breaker.
The big one: Charge to 80% state of charge (SOC) most of the time. This reduces stress on the battery cells.
My take: It's solid advice for longevity, but it cuts your usable range. On a 330-mile Tesla, charging to 80% and arriving home at 10% means you're effectively down to about 250 miles. If you're a long-term owner, go for it. But leasing? Tesla's problem at turnover—battery warranty covers you anyway (way beyond the basic 4-year/50k mile one). Tomato, tomahto!
Avoid deep discharges. Don't wait until your battery hits single digits. Tesla recommends plugging in more often to prevent strain from low SOC.
Pro tip from me: I used to push it to 1-5% before Supercharging for that "perfect timing" thrill. But now? Aim for 30-38% instead. Smarter play for battery health.
Never leave your battery at 0% or 100% for extended periods. For storage, target 50% SOC and keep it plugged in if possible. Use features like low power mode to minimize drain.
This is crucial if you're parking the car for weeks.
Onboard features like Sentry Mode, Dog Mode, or USB devices can drain ~1% per day. Tesla's app makes it easy—toggle low power mode right there. Game-changer for idle efficiency!
